第二次世界大战末期．医学系研究生胜吕服兵役前在病房和研究室做医学研究，他目睹了医学部内部由于争权夺势而导致患者死亡的事故，以及为掩盖事故真相设置的医疗骗局，粉碎了胜吕对未来的憧憬。当时正值太平洋战争末期，医学部迫于压力，同意与日本军方合作，对被俘的八名美军飞行员进行生理解剖，心灰意冷的胜吕与好友户田被征召入伍做助手。当时，研究人的肺部切除多少，仍能生存，心脏停止跳动多久后还能重新起博，这对战时医疗是一个重大的疑难课题。因此第一位美军俘虏成了活的试验品，被折磨了一小时二十分钟后死去。手术时，残忍的日本军官不停地开玩笑、拍照，竟将俘虏的肝脏摆在桌上饮酒狂欢，参与手术的户田受到了良心的谴责后十分痛苦，而胜吕仍旧沉浸在恐惧中，独自徘徊。。故事围绕一对处于分手边缘的情侣展开，他们后来卷入了一场离奇而又充满狂欢色彩的谋杀迷局。。A broken man finds the one thing he can't live without only to lose it.
