北宋神宗年间，王安石实施变法，苏轼因与王安石政见不合，身陷”乌台诗案“被贬黄州。黄州太守徐君猷是苏轼故交，担心苏轼写诗招祸，约法三章，其中一条”不准写诗填词“。苏轼寓居定惠院，与漁樵杂处，以此缓解苦闷。又因家大口阔，生计艰难，友人为他请得东门外废营田五十亩，耕种自食其力，因垦荒东坡，自号”东坡居士“。徐君猷被苏轼精神感动，送来犁杖耕牛，助其垦荒。又迁苏轼居所于临皋亭。。Noel Coward's attempt to show how the ordinary people lived between the wars.
