张金胜（高飞饰）、马辉（卢惠光饰）、王彪及霍强为结拜好友，一起打劫珠宝行入狱，行将获释时，四人却在监狱饭堂与另一帮囚犯争执打斗，辉三人被加刑两星期，胜如期出狱。胜前往埋藏珠宝地挖掘藏物，但珠宝却不翼而飞，遂前往狱中告诉辉等人，三人一口咬定胜独吞珠宝，胜无可解释，唯有逃走。私家侦探林韻诗（刘嘉玲饰）为了调查珠宝下落，籍故结识胜，并与胜一同离港。辉三人出狱后告示寻胜，胜四处逃亡，并与韻彻力侦查，发现原来辉与金大枝合谋，早将珠宝掘出，布下圈套嫁祸胜，于是胜与其他兄弟同陈、辉等斗智斗力...。山田日後承認在開拍此片之前，已心諳渥美清的肺病步入末期，決定此章為最後一章，並安排由淺丘瑠璃子演的莉莉送寅次郎踏上人生的最後一程。分別15年後，兩人於如詩如畫的奄美大島重逢，感情依舊，鬥氣繼續，沒完沒了似的。正如山田所想，雖然系列必須完結，但始終不想為寅次郎的故事／人生劃上句號。結局如常開放，代表寅一直繼續他的旅程，日本人依然有夢。 公映後翌年，渥美清病逝，享年68歲，本片亦成為他的遺作。 Yamada knew before production began that Atsumi's health has deteriorated to such an extent that Tora-san to the Rescue would be the last film in the series.
